He Said Her Name: A Bible Study on John 20:1-2, 11–18
This study is designed for small groups or personal reflection. It follows the arc of the scripture text through three movements, with questions intended to open conversation rather than close it. A downloadable handout is available below.
Read John 20:1–2, 11–18.
(We skip verses 3–10 — the footrace between Peter and the Beloved Disciple — to keep the focus on Mary's encounter with the risen Christ.)
Movement 1 — The Dark and the Empty Tomb (vv. 1–2)
John tells us Mary came "while it was still dark." That detail is deliberate. She arrives carrying grief and finds what looks like violation — a moved stone, a missing body. She doesn't consider resurrection. She runs to the disciples with the only explanation that makes sense to her: "They have taken the Lord."
Q1. Why does John want us to know about the darkness? Is he pointing to something beyond the hour on the clock?
Q2. Mary's first instinct is grave robbery, not resurrection. What does that tell us about the gap between what she expected and what God was actually doing?
Movement 2 — Weeping and Misrecognition (vv. 11–15)
Peter and the other disciple came, looked inside, and left. Mary stays. And staying, she comes face to face with the risen Jesus — and mistakes him for the gardener.
This is the climax of a pattern that runs through all of John's Gospel. Nicodemus hears "born again" and thinks about reentering the womb. The Samaritan woman hears "living water" and reaches for a bucket. People keep hearing Jesus in earthly terms when he means something spiritual. And here, at the most important moment in the story, it happens one final time.
Q3. Peter and John leave. Mary stays. What does that tell us about the difference between examining evidence and being present to grief?
Q4. Jesus asks two questions he already knows the answers to: "Why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?" Why questions instead of revelation?
Q5. Have you ever been so bent over by the weight of something — grief, exhaustion, fear, routine — that you couldn't see what was right in front of you?
Movement 3 — The Name and the Commission (vv. 16–18)
Then Jesus says one word: "Mary." No argument, no proof, no spectacle. Just her name. And everything changes.
But he doesn't let her stay in that moment. "Do not cling to me." And then: "Go and tell my brothers." The most personal encounter in the Gospels becomes the first commission of the resurrection.
Q6. Why is a name — not evidence, not argument — what finally breaks through? What does it mean that the risen Christ makes himself known by knowing us?
Q7. Jesus moves Mary from recognition to commission in a single breath. What's the connection between hearing your name called and being sent to tell others?
Reflection
A seventeenth-century monk named Brother Lawrence spent his life practicing awareness of God's presence in the monastery kitchen — peeling potatoes, scrubbing pots. His conversations were compiled into a beloved devotional called The Practice of the Presence of God. His discovery was Mary's discovery: the holy doesn't announce itself the way we expect.
Q8. If the risen Christ shows up in ordinary places and speaks in ordinary ways, where in your daily life might you be mistaking him for the gardener?
Q9. Mary's response to hearing her name is four words: "I have seen the Lord." If you are a resurrection person, how does that change what you see — and what you say — this week?
